36 CL Prop Question

Postby slingsch » Sun Mar 11, 2018 8:25 pm

I realize this topic has been "beat to death", but every combination of hull, engine and transmission yields a different answer. Here it goes:

I have a '94 36 CL with twin 135 Lehmans and BW 5000 trans with a 2.47:1 gear ratio. The factory props are 25.5D X 20P X 1.5" shaft Sone Marine. The prop shop said they were reconditioned 3 times and need to be replaced. They sent the yard 24D X 20P Michigans saying they were equivalent since they had wider blades. It turns out since the shaft was 1.5", they could not get >24D. They can, but it would take 8-10 weeks for a special order.

I see the older 36 CL's had a 24D X 17/18P. The new 24's are on my boat, so my question is; do I just go with the 24's or should I special order he 25's with a 1.5" shaft size?

Thanks,

Steve Lingsch

Hi Steve I have a 77 36 with twin lehmans and the 24x17/18's. Considering they used the same props and engines for the 42 of this vintage I think you should be good with the 24". Your vintage is a little wider and may displace more then mine but very similar. BTW: what is the length of your prop shafts? I'm trying to estimate the cost of replacement for my boat.

Thanks Berger - I appreciate the advice. I will not be back to the boat for a week, but I will let you know.

According to the owner's manual (available the resources/manuals section of the IAGBO site) the original props on my former (and greatly missed) GB 36CL #790, with twin 135 Lehmans and BW Velvet Drive transmissions were DIA 26" X PITCH 21" X 3 BLADE by Stone Marine, on 1.5" shafts; however, I can't confirm the accuracy of the manual, nor would I know if they had been changed prior to my ownership. I would think one would/could compensate for reduced diameter with increased pitch, if necessary?
