interpreting the transom serial number

Postby tleath » Sun Jun 17, 2018 8:04 am

I was in Little Washington, NC this week to help a friend bring back a Marine Trader to Pawley's Island. He said he couldn't afford a Grand Banks.

While at McCotter's Boat Yard, I saw a Grand Banks with the following stamped on the transom "GNDC03830873". Am I correct in reading this to be Hull #383 built in August 1973? She looked like a brand new boat, except all her outside metal was bronze.

She was beautiful. I felt pretty good about the condition of my 1972, but compared to this vessel, mine looks 46 years old.

with that serial number given, does it mean she was built in 1973?

This is for my boat.

Pelican’s HIN number is GNDCO874B989

The first three characters are the Manufacturer Identification Code: GND

Characters four through eight are hull serial numbers assigned by manufacturer: C0874 “C” means a 36, “0874” is the sequential hull number

Characters nine and ten indicate date of certification: B9 February 1989

Characters eleven and twelve are the model year: 89 1989

Any thoughts as to what the “XX” means?

"The regulations prescribe the format of the HIN. The first three characters are a MIC (Manufacturer Identification Code) assigned by the Coast Guard to the manufacturer or the person importing the boat; characters four through eight are a serial number assigned by the manufacturer; the last four characters indicate the month and year the boat was built, and the model year. """""""""Prior to August 1, 1984, the manufacturer had the option of expressing this in the form of a model year designation.""""""""""
