WABASTO HEATER PROBLEMS

Sporadic starts! Often when Glo Plug relay starts and in the required 30 sec glow the fuel pump starts but then it shuts down and starts a PURGE cycle. Says to me that either the Flame sensor malfunctioned or there was no flame to begin with. Other times all OK. Checked all elect connections and Voltages. Replaced Glo Plug but not Flame detector. Friend (electronics expert) thinks it is an intermittent but hard to find electrical connector problem or the Firmware itself. Other potential is the so-called FLEECE that apparently distributes the fuel to the burner assembly so that it flashes up at the Glo plug. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MOST WELCOME.

If you took a wave and got sea water in the exhaust, that could cause your symptoms as well due to no draft shut down. Remove the plug at the low spot on the exhaust and see what comes out.

Most likely you need to replace the fuel nozzle. Simple to do. Swing out the burner assembly and replace. Make sure ignition electrodes are adjusted correctly. You can also clean the flame sensor window.

Webastos don't like to sit. Diesel in the fuel nozzle will eventually dry out and prevent proper fuel atomization. Always good to have a spare nozzle around. Ideally run the unit once a month for a full heat cycle.

sporadic starts for me were due to gunk in the pilot hole. There's a tiny hole in the back of the burner that can get a speck of ash in it - that can cause sporadic starts. Also if the 'fleece' is super warm that can also screw it up. Webasto says you can't replace the fleece - it's a permanent part of the burner (which you can replace). The fleece is super well attached, and seems to play a critical part in how it runs (they did call it some kind of ferro combustion). If in doubt, call the Webasto technical service. Amazingly helpful, I've called them many-a-time.
