Did I fry my alternator

Postby Berger » Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:59 am

Hi All I noticed that my alternator gauge's read 0 while running. Most of the time I have the boat on shore power with the charger on and have run the engines at the dock while still attached to shore power. Would that have damaged the alternators? Can I test the alternators, have them repaired or should they be replaced and if replacement is necessary what should I replace them with? They no longer make the Motorola 8RG2010A? Thanks

Hi!
A quick initial test would be to measure the voltage on the batteries with the shore power disconnected. If you measure 13.5-15.5V on the batteries while engine is running then it’s working.

Find out the model of your alternator and google search to understand the connections. It could be the alternator is functioning and the voltage regulator (internal or external) is the culprit.
It’s just a simple matter of tracing out the output from the alternator 1st and regulator 2nd.

Here’s a few links that might help.
