How much paint do I need for a 42 classic? Waterline and up, hull and cabin.

You will probably get a better answer from your paint supplier. As they should be familiar with the products coverage and have a formula for your boat.

I have to use my favorite line from a bosun I used to sail with on a brigantine...

When youve almost enough, just add a little more..!!

The same guy introduced me to "the long stand" :/

For future reference for others, it only takes about 3 gallons from the water line and up, hull and cabin.
